Monaco, November 27: Nanjing has been awarded the hosting rights of the 2020 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Indoor Championships.

The Chinese city which shot to fame after hosting the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, had bid for the biennial IAAF event along with Serbia's Belgrade and Poland's Torun.

After presentations made by all the three bidders, the decision to award Nanjing the hosting rights, was taken at the IAAF Council Meeting held in Monaco last week, which chaired by its chief Lord Sebastian Coe.

"I look forward to celebrating the very best of world athletics in 2020 in Nanjing. The hosting of these championships will assist the development of an already established and growing culture of athletics in the country," said Coe.

Nanjing, a city of more than 8 million, will build a stadium specifically for the World Indoor Championships in the Youth Olympic Sports Park. It will offer a permanent legacy as an athletics training centre after the championships.

"It's a great honor for Nanjing to win the right to host the IAAF World Indoor Championships 2020. In the following two and a half years, with the help and guidance of the Chinese Athletic Association, the whole city will spare no effort to deliver a wonderful sports festival," said Nanjing Vice-Mayor Hu Wanjin, who was part of the bid delegation.
