National Sports Festival for Women begin tommorrow

Jalandhar, Feb 13 (UNI) Over 1,000 participants would be taking part in the 33rd National Sports Festival for Women to be held here from February 14-17 in the discipline of Basketball, Hockey, Kho Kho and Gymnastics.

Punjab Sports director Pargat Singh, while talking to media persons here today said the year 1975 was celebrated as International Women Year and the Government of India then decided to hold sports festival for women annually with an aim to involve larger number of women in sports activities at various levels.

Earlier all the games were held together but later, for the convenience of the organisers, the games were devided into three groups accordingly, he said adding Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis and Swimming taken in Group I, while Athletics, Handball, Kabaddi and Volleyball were adjusted in Group II and Basketball, Hockey, Kho Kho and Gymnastics were shifted to Group III.

Mr Singh informed that so far 19 States including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand and West Bengal have confirmed their participation in the national event.

This Group-III Sports Festival for Women was earlier slated to be held in Jammu, which could not be organised there due to some unavoidable reasons, and then shifted to Jalandhar, Mr Singh said.
