National Tent Pegging championship to begin on Dec 27

Imphal, Dec 26: The hosting of the National Tent Pegging championship and subsequent international meet in Manipur is expected to give a new lease of life to the endangered Manipur variety of pony, equine experts here opined.

The five-day national championship begins tomorrow in which teams from the army, Assam Rifles, Indo Tibetan Border Police, Punjab Police and some states are scheduled to vie for the coveted trophy, organised jointly by Manipur Equestrian Association and Equestrian Federation of India. The events will be played at the Imphal Polo ground, world's oldest polo ground.

N Shyamanada Singh, working president of Manipur Equestrian Association and N Tombi Raj, the organising secretary, today said the tournament will be followed by All India Police Equestrian meet and International Tent Pegging championship.

Teams from Oman, UK, Egypt and the host country will take part in the championship.

Tombi Raj Baid the events are being organised with the theme to protect Manipuri pony which is an endangered species.

There are only five recognized equines in India and the Manipuri pony is highly endangered as there are only 600 Manipuri pony now, Tombi Raj said.

The events were of special significance as the tournament is played in the oldest polo ground in the world, the Mapal Kangjeibung (Polo ground). Manipur gave the game of polo to the world and the traditional polo games will also be displayed during the tournament.
