Naveen presents Biju Patnaik awards

Bhubaneswar,Apr 17 (UNI) Former Orissa football team captain Debendra Prasad Singh was today presented the Biju Patnaik award for life time achievement in promotion of sports and games while international women hockey player Jyoti Sunita Kullu received the Biju Patnaik award for outstanding performance in sports and games for 2006.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gave away the awards at a state level death anniversary function of Biju Patnaik. While Mr.Singh received the cash award of Rs.1.5 lakh and a citation, Mrs Kullu was presented a cash award of Rs.1 lakh.

State hockey coach Amulya Nanda Bihari and women football coach Bijaya Kumar Kanungo shared the Biju Patnaik outstanding coach awards and were presented with a cash award of Rs.25,000 each.

Sports journalist Suresh Swain was given the Biju Patnaik outstanding sports journalist award which carried a cash reward of Rs.30,000 and a citation.

Others who were also felicitated in the function included Jagannath Behera for Biju Patnaik bravery award,T S Das and Sushant Kumar Sahoo for state youth award (individual) for social service, Soumyashree Mishra for state youth award for music (hindustani), Satrupa Mishra state youth award for dance (odissi), Ashok Kumar Rout for creative literature, Ramakanta Samantray for creative literature (essay and fiction), Sandeep Kumar Muduli for creative graphics and Abdul Salam Khan for painting.

The Chief Minister recalled the vision of Biju Patnaik to make Orissa a most prosperous state in the country. He said Biju Babu loved sports and initiated several measures to encourage sports in the state.

Among others state Finance Minister P C Ghadei and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Debashis Nayak also addressed the function.
