NBA Pistons Clinch Central Division Title With 127-116 Win Over Raptors

The NBA playoff race tightened on 1 April as the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers secured division titles, while the Houston Rockets kept their surge going. Detroit captured the Central Division, Los Angeles sealed the Pacific Division, and Houston extended a winning streak, with all three victories featuring standout scoring displays from their leading players.

Luka Doncic powered the Lakers to a 127-113 home win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring 42 points and delivering 12 assists. Doncic shot 13 of 26 from the field and recorded a 16th game with at least 40 points this season. Doncic returned after missing the 1 April victory over the Washington Wizards because of technical foul accumulation.

The Lakers had already clinched the Pacific Division title, plus a guaranteed top-six Western Conference playoff berth, earlier on 1 April. That happened when the Phoenix Suns lost in Orlando. Austin Reaves added 19 points, while LeBron James, Jake LaRavia and Rui Hachimura each scored 14. James played despite continued soreness in a left foot and was a game-time decision.

Jarrett Allen led Cleveland with 18 points and was supported by 17 points from James Harden, who played a first game in the hometown since a 4 February trade by the Los Angeles Clippers. Donovan Mitchell was limited to 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting as the Cavaliers struggled to match the Lakers offence during key stretches.

Jalen Duren produced 31 points and nine rebounds as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Toronto Raptors 127-116, earning a first Central Division title in 18 years. Detroit last topped the division in 2007-08, which completed a streak of four successive division crowns. The Pistons have now won seven of their past nine fixtures.

Duren has raised production since Cade Cunningham sustained a lung injury on 17 March against the Washington Wizards, when Detroit won 130-117. Over seven games without Cunningham, Duren is averaging 23.4 points and 10.5 rebounds. The Pistons are 6-2 in that spell, including an overtime defeat in Oklahoma City on 31 March, a game Duren missed.

Daniss Jenkins contributed 21 points for Detroit, while Duncan Robinson added 19 as the Pistons gained some revenge for a 119-108 loss in Toronto on 15 March. RJ Barrett led the Raptors with 24 points and Brandon Ingram supplied 22. Toronto had previously won six of nine games before allowing Detroit to control this contest.

Rockets win over Knicks extends streak

Kevin Durant scored 27 points as the Houston Rockets controlled the New York Knicks 111-94. Houston built a 37-point opening quarter and never trailed, holding a double-digit cushion for most of the game. It was a third consecutive victory for the Rockets, following a brief two-game losing run in March.

The Rockets had fallen 108-106 in New York during the first meeting in February, but this contest followed a different pattern. Houston led by 20 entering the final quarter and still held a 19-point margin with about two minutes left, when both coaches emptied benches. All five Rockets starters scored at least 13 points.

Amen Thompson and Tari Eason had 17 points each for Houston. Jabari Smith Jr. added 15, and Alperen Sengun recorded 13 points plus a team-best 10 assists. Reed Sheppard produced 20 points from the bench alongside five rebounds. Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with 22 points and eight rebounds, yet New York slipped to a third straight defeat, all by double figures, after previously winning seven in a row.
