NBA Roundup: Thunder Dominate Lakers As Rockets Win And Celtics Triumph
Oklahoma City, Houston and Boston each strengthened playoff positions on 8 April, with convincing NBA results over depleted or fading opponents. The Thunder dominated the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers, the Rockets overturned Phoenix despite an early 21-point hole, and the Celtics pulled away from Charlotte in the fourth quarter.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander guided Oklahoma City to a 123-87 home win, recording 25 points and eight assists as the Thunder completed a clean season sweep against the Lakers. Isaiah Joe supported with six 3-pointers, while Chet Holmgren added a double-double and rookie Jared McCain chipped in from the bench.

The Thunder, who lead the NBA overall, extended their winning streak to six games and have now taken 18 of their last 19. Holmgren produced 15 points and 10 rebounds, with McCain matching 15 points, giving Oklahoma City multiple scoring sources around Gilgeous-Alexander’s playmaking and Joe’s outside shooting.
The Lakers endured their lowest point total of the season while missing Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart and Jaxson Hayes, a group averaging 94.6 points per game. Doncic and Reaves are sidelined for the remainder of the regular season, intensifying pressure on Los Angeles’ rotation.
James, now 41, sat out to rest an arthritic left foot, leaving Rui Hachimura to lead the Lakers with 15 points, while Drew Timme scored 11. The Pacific Division champions have dropped three straight since Doncic and Reaves were injured in Oklahoma City last week, halting earlier momentum toward the third seed.
Los Angeles had previously taken 13 wins from 14 games and was closing on third place in the Western Conference. That surge stalled when Doncic suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Doncic is currently in Europe seeking treatment, and the Lakers’ offence has clearly struggled in his absence.
{TABLE_1}In Phoenix, the Houston Rockets stretched their winning run to seven by defeating the Suns 119-105 after trailing 26-5 early. Kevin Durant marked a return to his former home arena with 24 points, hitting 5 of 9 attempts from beyond the arc for Houston.
The Rockets moved level with the Lakers for the Western Conference’s fourth seed as all five starters reached double figures. Durant, a 16-time All-Star, heard both boos and cheers during introductions. The offseason trade that sent Durant to Houston brought Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green to the Suns.
Phoenix started hot, making 10 of the first 15 shots and building a 21-point cushion midway through the opening quarter. Houston responded steadily, trimming the gap to 57-54 by halftime, then edging ahead briefly in the third before the Suns recovered to take an 84-81 advantage entering the final period.
Houston opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points and never surrendered the lead again. Durant’s late 3-pointer pushed the Rockets’ margin to 111-96 with 4:14 remaining, sealing control. That closing surge highlighted Houston’s composure and further tightened the Western Conference playoff race behind the conference leaders.
{TABLE_2}Celtics tighten seeding with Hornets NBA results
Jaylen Brown powered the Boston Celtics past the Charlotte Hornets 113-102, posting 35 points and nine rebounds. Brown has scored at least 26 points in 10 straight outings. Jayson Tatum supplied 23 points and has reached 20 or more in six consecutive games.
This victory moved Boston closer to securing the Eastern Conference’s second seed and delivered a 2-1 edge in the season series with Charlotte, a possible first-round opponent. The Hornets once led by 11 during the first half, but Boston changed the tone after halftime with a strong third quarter.
The Celtics outscored Charlotte 35-26 in the third period to carry a 90-87 lead into the final quarter. Boston’s defence then limited the Hornets to 15 points in the last 12 minutes, stretching the advantage to 13. LaMelo Ball finished with 36 points, recording a second straight game above 30.
{TABLE_3}Across the league, these NBA results strengthened the Thunder’s grip on the best overall record, lifted Houston into a share of fourth and pushed Boston closer to second in the East. For the injury-hit Lakers and inconsistent Suns and Hornets, the latest setbacks complicated their late-season plans.
