NBA Semifinals: Thunder And Pistons Secure 2-0 Leads At Home
The Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons both moved ahead 2-0 in their NBA playoffs second-round series, each winning at home on 8 May 2026. Oklahoma City beat the Los Angeles Lakers 125-107, while Detroit handled the Cleveland Cavaliers 107-97 to tighten control of their matchups.
The Thunder victory gave the defending champions a 6-0 record in this postseason and increased pressure on the short-handed Lakers. Los Angeles again lacked scoring champion Luka Doncic, who remained sidelined with a strained left hamstring, and also missed injured forward Jarred Vanderbilt for the second straight game.

Oklahoma City built the win around balanced scoring, with Chet Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander each finishing with 22 points. Ajay Mitchell added 20 and Jaren McCain contributed 18, as the Thunder bench and secondary options maintained scoring pressure throughout. The Lakers will host Game 3 on Saturday, needing a response at home.
Lakers guard Austin Reaves answered criticism from Game 1 by leading all scorers with 31 points on 10-for-16 shooting. LeBron James followed a 27-point opener with 23 points in Game 2. However, three Lakers players ended with five fouls, which reduced defensive aggression during key stretches in the second half.
The third quarter proved decisive. While Gilgeous-Alexander rested, Oklahoma City still outscored Los Angeles 32-15, turning a close contest into a 93-80 lead entering the fourth period. The Lakers later closed the gap to five points, but the Thunder regained control in the final minutes and restored a comfortable margin.
Earlier, the Pistons matched Oklahoma City’s position in the NBA playoffs by moving 2-0 up on Cleveland. Detroit’s 107-97 win came against a Cavaliers team that had gone 4-0 at home against Toronto in the first round. Game 3 will shift to Cleveland on Saturday with added pressure on the hosts.
The top-seeded Pistons extended their winning streak to five games after surviving a first-round scare, when Orlando had pushed them to the brink of elimination. Cade Cunningham guided Detroit with 25 points and 10 assists, while Tobias Harris delivered 21 points as another steady scoring outlet in the half-court offence.
| Game | Team | Key Performers | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thunder vs Lakers | Oklahoma City Thunder | Chet Holmgren 22, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 22, Ajay Mitchell 20, Jaren McCain 18 | 125 |
| Thunder vs Lakers | Los Angeles Lakers | Austin Reaves 31, LeBron James 23 | 107 |
| Pistons vs Cavaliers | Detroit Pistons | Cade Cunningham 25 pts, 10 ast; Tobias Harris 21; Duncan Robinson 17; Daniss Jenkins 14 | 107 |
| Pistons vs Cavaliers | Cleveland Cavaliers | Donovan Mitchell 31; Jarrett Allen 22 pts, 7 reb; James Harden 10 | 97 |
Detroit also received important contributions from role players. Duncan Robinson scored 17 points and made 5 of 9 attempts from three-point range, stretching Cleveland’s defence. Daniss Jenkins came off the bench to supply 14 points, marking a third consecutive playoff game in which Jenkins reached double figures for the Pistons.
The Cavaliers relied heavily on their main scorers. Donovan Mitchell finished with 31 points and Jarrett Allen produced 22 points plus seven rebounds, answering criticism after a quiet Game 1. James Harden struggled, missing 10 of 13 shots and ending with 10 points while committing four turnovers in crucial situations.
Max Strus, who had scored 19 points in the series opener, managed only three points in Game 2. Cleveland missed all 11 of its three-point attempts in the fourth quarter, with Strus responsible for four of those misses. One late Harden turnover, with 33 seconds left and the deficit at six, hurt Cleveland’s comeback hopes.
Both series now move to Los Angeles and Cleveland with the Thunder and Pistons holding 2-0 advantages in the NBA playoffs. The Lakers must adjust without Luka Doncic and Jarred Vanderbilt, while the Cavaliers seek improved shooting and ball security to extend their second-round campaigns at home.
