Indian javelin ace Neeraj Chopra finally etched his name into the 90-metre club, creating history at the 2025 Doha Diamond League in Qatar on Friday night.
Competing at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium, Chopra delivered a sensational performance that included a massive 90.23m throw in his third attempt - marking the first time in his illustrious career that he breached the elusive 90-metre barrier.

Chopra, who is a former Olympic and World Champion, wasted no time setting the tone for the evening. He launched a world-leading throw of 88.44m on his very first attempt, immediately putting pressure on the rest of the field. That opening effort remained the benchmark until Chopra sent the javelin flying even farther in his third attempt, finally achieving a milestone that had eluded him for years.
The moment was met with thunderous applause and visible relief from the Indian superstar, who has consistently hovered around the 90m mark but had never crossed it until now. His previous personal best was 89.94m, achieved in the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League.
Chopra's achievement is not just a personal triumph but a major milestone for Indian athletics. For years, the 90m throw has been considered the gold standard in men's javelin, and Chopra's entry into this elite club solidifies his position among the all-time greats of the sport.
Meanwhile, fellow Indian javelin thrower Kishore Jena, the 2023 Asian Games silver medallist, also had a positive outing. After an underwhelming start with a 68.07m effort, Jena bounced back with a season-best 78.60m in his second throw, showing encouraging signs ahead of a packed athletics calendar.
With this historic throw, Chopra has taken a huge leap in the Doha leg of the Diamond League but also sent a strong message ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year. His performance underlined India's growing presence in global track and field events, as fans across the world celebrated a truly iconic night for Indian sport.
