Crowned World Champion a few days ago, Neeraj Chopra will vie for another big medal in the 2023 season as he participates in the Zurich Diamond League at the Letzigrund in Zurich on Thursday (August 31).
The events start late at night and Murali Sreeshankar is the first to compete on the night as his men's long jump event begins at 11:45 PM IST while Neeraj Chopra will be in action post-midnight as the men's javelin throw event begins at 12:12 PM IST in what is called 2-hour shootout of the famed Diamond League, which is known for carrying hefty cash money for the winners.
Neeraj Chopra, who won the World Athletics Championships 2023 with an 88.17 metre throw in the final in Budapest, returns to Letzigrund as defending champions as the reigning Olympic champion also won his last event here -- Diamond League final -- in 2022 as he threw as long as 88.44m.
Neeraj Chopra is in great form already following his big throw in Budapest and could go all the way to 90m for the first time in his career. The Indian javelin super star has competed in just two events prior to the Worlds and is now preparing to defend his gold medal at the Asian Games in Huangzhou next month.
Murali Sreeshankar, on the other hand, will be looking to find his mojo back following the World Championships debacle. The long jumper, who made his Diamond League debut in Laussane with a fifth spot finish, could only manage a disappoint 7.74m in Budapest in his failure to reach the final rounds.
This comes at the back of his 8.41m jump in Bhubaneswar back in July, which put his second in the world ranking behind compatriot Jeswin Aldrin, who is not competing in the event.
