Neeraj Chopra Provides Major Injury Update, Targets Return To Training In Coming Weeks
Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra has provided an encouraging update on his injury recovery, revealing that he could return to training and begin his rehabilitation programme within the next couple of weeks. The Indian javelin star, who has shifted his focus towards next year following the injury setback, is determined to regain his competitive edge and produce strong performances on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The two-time Olympic medallist admitted that his recovery was initially challenging but said his condition has improved considerably. After consulting renowned sports medicine specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Neeraj has received clearance to gradually resume training and begin the rehabilitation process.

"My injury is much better now. I faced some issues initially in the first month and a half, but it has improved significantly. I consulted Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and he has advised that I can now resume training and begin proper rehabilitation. My plan is to start both in the next couple of weeks," Neeraj told SAI Media.
The 2023 World Champion also explained that he had followed his medical team's instructions and opted for complete rest to ensure proper recovery. He further acknowledged the continued assistance provided by the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) throughout his career.
"For my injury, the doctors had advised rest, and that is exactly what I followed. With regard to competitions, TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) and SAI (Sports Authority of India) have been supporting me for years. I have been part of the TOPS Core Group for many years now, and whenever I need any support, they are there," he added.
Meanwhile, India's javelin contingent at the 2026 Asian Games witnessed Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav step up in the absence of Neeraj and Kishore Jena. Yashvir secured the silver medal, while Rohit finished with bronze, ensuring India maintained its presence on the podium in the men's javelin throw.
Beyond his recovery, Neeraj also welcomed the Union Cabinet's approval of the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme on October 28. He believes the initiative could address one of the major challenges faced by Indian athletes, access to quality sporting equipment.
The Olympic champion highlighted how athletes often struggle to procure specialised equipment domestically and are consequently forced to depend on imports. He expressed confidence that promoting domestic manufacturing would make sporting goods more accessible.
"The Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme, which was approved by the Union Cabinet, is an amazing step. Athletes face a lot of issues in procuring certain equipment in India or have to import sporting equipment from abroad. With schemes like these, as equipment will be manufactured in India, it will become much easier for them to source it," he noted.
Neeraj also extended his wishes to the Indian athletes preparing for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games, encouraging them to embrace the international experience without allowing pressure or nervousness to affect their performances.
He urged the young contingent to treat the competition as an opportunity to learn from athletes across the world, gain valuable experience and use the pressure as motivation.
"I wish all the best to the athletes heading to the Youth Olympics. Enjoy the experience and don't take too much pressure or get nervous. Whatever pressure you face at the Youth Olympics is good for you as it teaches you a lot. Use this opportunity to observe others and channel the pressure to your advantage, and I am sure you will do your best."
