New York Liberty Achieve Historic First WNBA Championship By Defeating Minnesota Lynx

The New York Liberty won their inaugural WNBA championship by overcoming the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in overtime. Despite shooting struggles from key players, Jonquel Jones' performance earned her Finals MVP.

The New York Liberty clinched their inaugural WNBA championship by defeating the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in overtime during Game 5 of the Finals. Breanna Stewart's crucial free throws with 5.2 seconds left in regulation pushed the game into extra time. In overtime, the Liberty's defense was impenetrable, preventing the Lynx from scoring any field goals and securing a long-awaited title for one of the league's founding teams.

New York had previously reached the Finals five times but fell short each time, including last year's loss to the Las Vegas Aces. This season, they finished with a league-best 32-8 record. Despite shooting difficulties from stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, who combined for only five successful shots out of 34 attempts, the team managed to win this decisive match.

Liberty Win First WNBA Championship Title

Stewart contributed significantly with 15 rebounds and 13 points despite her shooting woes. Jonquel Jones played a pivotal role as well, scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds. Her performance earned her the WNBA Finals MVP award.

Minnesota, aiming for a record fifth WNBA title, saw strong performances from Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride, who scored 22 and 21 points respectively. Despite holding a 12-point lead in the second quarter, they couldn't maintain it. In overtime, they missed all six field goal attempts, falling short of their first championship since 2017.

The Lynx led 60-58 entering the final minute of regulation after Collier's back-to-back baskets capped a six-point run. However, they failed to score on their next two possessions. Stewart then tied the game by making two free throws after being fouled by Alanna Smith.

Key Plays in Overtime

Kayla McBride missed a potential game-winning three-pointer just before regulation ended. In overtime, New York quickly took control by scoring the first five points and never looked back. Leonie Fiebich opened with a three-pointer to give New York an edge. Nyara Sabally later intercepted McBride's pass and made a layup to extend their lead to 65-60 with just over three minutes remaining.

This victory marks a significant achievement for New York Liberty as they finally capture their first championship after years of near misses. Their resilience and teamwork were key factors in overcoming challenges throughout this intense series against Minnesota Lynx.
