New York Yankees break drought, reach World Series after 15 long years

By MyKhel Staff

Aaron Judge dominated the regular season, while Giancarlo Stanton shined in the playoffs, but it was Juan Soto who sent the New York Yankees to the World Series. Soto's dramatic three-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning secured a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday, clinching the Yankees' first AL pennant in 15 years.

Judge led the regular season with 58 home runs, and Stanton added five more in the postseason. However, none was more crucial than Soto's game-winning blast, which broke the tie and propelled the Yankees to victory. New York's bullpen was stellar, with four relievers combining for 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Luke Weaver (1-0) pitched the final two frames to earn the win.

Cleveland took the early lead, with Bo Naylor's double driving in his brother, Josh Naylor, in the second inning, marking a rare postseason moment where siblings contributed to a run. Steven Kwan added to the lead with an RBI single in the fifth, putting the Guardians up 2-0. Cleveland's starter, Tanner Bibee, kept the Yankees at bay until Stanton's two-run homer tied the game in the sixth, crushing a 117.5 mph shot after Judge grounded into a double play.

Soto, who had three hits in the game, fought off four consecutive foul balls in the 10th inning before launching a 1-2 fastball from Guardians pitcher Hunter Gaddis (1-1) over the right-center field wall. It was Soto's third homer of the series and his second in as many games. Gleyber Torres contributed with two hits and sparked the offense early with a leadoff single, although he was thrown out at home trying to score on Soto's double.

Stanton earned the ALCS MVP title, hitting .222 with four homers and seven RBIs in the series. The Guardians, despite finishing with the second-best record in the AL, fell short in their first ALCS appearance since the 2016 World Series.

Weaver capped the game by pitching a scoreless 10th inning, working around a one-out single by Kyle Manzardo and retiring Jose Ramirez and Lane Thomas to seal the win. The Yankees, overcoming a 2-0 deficit, never led until Soto's clutch home run in extra innings.

Yankees break 15-year drought

The New York Yankees, one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball history, have faced a prolonged World Series drought since their last title in 2009. For a team that has won 27 championships, the longest drought in their modern history has been marked by near-misses, promising rosters, and ultimately, frustration for a fanbase that is accustomed to winning.

In 2009, the Yankees clinched their 27th World Series title, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. That championship seemed to affirm the team's return to dominance, as they had previously struggled to reach the top since their 2000 victory. The success in 2009 was built on a powerful roster that included the likes of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Alex Rodriguez, as well as key acquisitions like Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett. New manager Joe Girardi, who had taken over the reins just a year earlier, found the perfect blend of veteran leadership and fresh talent to guide the team to victory.

However, since that triumph, the Yankees have struggled to make it back to the World Series. Despite consistently posting winning seasons, the path to the Fall Classic has been blocked by a variety of factors: pitching woes, injuries to key players, and formidable competition from other teams, particularly in the American League. The franchise has been ousted from the playoffs several times in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), with losses to teams like the Houston Astros in 2017 and 2019, and the Texas Rangers in 2010.
