NFL Team Proposes Rule Change to Ban 'Tush Push' Play Popularized by Eagles

By Tanisha Chhabra

The Philadelphia Eagles made the "Tush Push" quarterback sneak popular, and an unidentified NFL franchise has proposed to outlaw it. During a pause in meetings at the NFL Scouting Combine, Troy Vincent, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, confirmed the submission.

He did not, however, name the group in charge of the plan. Next month, NFL owners will study the issue and vote on whether to approve the rule change at the NFL Annual League Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.

The "Tush Push," also known as the "Brotherly Shove," is a play in which teammates push the quarterback forward to get the yards needed for a first down or touchdown when there is limited yardage. With quarterback Jalen Hurts at the helm, the play has proven especially successful for the Eagles. The Eagles and Buffalo Bills have ran the play 163 times over the last three seasons, with an 87% success rate—much higher than the NFL average of 71%.

The main concern raised about the play is player safety. Bills head coach Sean McDermott, a member of the competition committee, has expressed concerns about the risk of injury. He noted that the force and techniques involved in the play could put players in harm's way. Although McDermott emphasized the importance of player safety, he acknowledged that the injury data associated with the play has not shown a significant increase in injuries.

The proposal will undergo further discussion by the competition committee, which will present its findings to the league’s owners. If the proposal proceeds, it will be put to a vote, with approval requiring 24 of the 32 NFL team owners. While some teams, including the Eagles, argue that the play provides a competitive advantage, others have raised concerns about its safety. The final vote will determine whether the "Tush Push" remains part of the NFL's playbook in the future.
