Nikhat Zareen will be one of four Indian boxers competing in the semi-final round of the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on Thursday (March 23).

Zareen, who won the gold medal in the 52 kg category last year, will face Colombia's Ingrit Valencia in the last four bout of the 50 kg category this year and the Indian pugilist is just two wins away from landing another yellow metal.

The Commonwealth gold medallist secured a hard-fought victory by 5-2 on points against the two-time World Championships bronze medallist Chuthamat Raksat of Thailand to reach the semifinal.

In the earlier rounds, the defending flyweight World Champion Zareen, had earned a RSC (Referee Stopped Contest) win over Azerbaijan's Anakhanim Ismayilova before a couple of unanimous decision wins over Algeria's Roumaysa Boualam and Mexico's Fatima Herrera.

Meanwhile, her opponent Valencia, who finished the silver medallist in 2022, reached the last four bout after a 4-1 victory over Italy's Giordana Sorrentino in the quarterfinal round. Both Zareen and Valencia are assured of a medal having reached the semifinal.

In the earlier rounds, the Colombian, who earned a bye in the first round, claimed a RSC over Kenya's Veronica Mbithe followed by a unanimous decision win over Bulgaria's Zlatislava Chukanova.

The winner of Nikhat Zareen vs Ingrit Valencia will face the winner of the other semifinal between Vietnam's Nguyen Thị Tam and France's Wassila Lkhadiri in the gold medal bout scheduled for later this weekend.
