CWG: Stadium starts leaking after the heavy rain

New Delhi, Aug 1: Government officials and contractors connected with building the infrastructure for the 2010 Commonwealth Games were left red- faced once again due to heavy rain in the national capital.

According to reports, the roof of the weightlifting auditorium, built close to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and various other stadium started leaking after the heavy showers, which resulted in water accumulating inside that section of the stadium.

Four key venues-the Yamuna Sports Complex in east Delhi, where the table tennis event will be held; Siri Fort in south Delhi, where the badminton matches will be played; the weightlifting complex of the main Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium; and the Karni Singh shooting ranges-began to leak on Saturday, Jul 31, following the rain.

However, sports minister MS Gill has said that there is no need to panic and that the problem would be sorted out soon.

Eye-witnesses at the Yamuna Sports Complex and the Siri Fort said the roof was leaking on Saturday, Jul 31, and the wooden floor was further damaged.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main venue for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010. The stadium, which will host both the opening and closing ceremonies, has the seating capacity of 60,000 persons, third largest in India, and has been constructed by 4000 labourers, working in double shift.
