Lando Norris Regrets Costly Penalty Impacting McLaren's Performance In Qatar GP

Lando Norris admitted he let down McLaren after a penalty at the Qatar Grand Prix affected his race. Despite finishing 10th, he acknowledged the team's efforts and the importance of the upcoming Abu Dhabi race.

Lando Norris expressed regret after receiving a 10-second stop-and-go penalty at the Qatar Grand Prix, which resulted in a 10th-place finish. The British driver was competing with Max Verstappen for the lead when he was penalised for ignoring double-waved yellow flags, causing him to fall back. Despite recovering positions towards the end, McLaren's hopes for the Constructors' Championship will now be decided in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

"Honestly, I don't know what I've done wrong at the minute. Apparently, I didn't slow under the yellow. I'm not an idiot—if I knew there was a yellow I would have slowed down," Norris told Sky Sports after the race. "I don't know if I've missed it or just been dumb. But, yeah, the rule is if you don't slow down under a yellow, that's the penalty, so it's a fair penalty."

Norris Regrets Penalty at Qatar GP

Max Verstappen secured victory in Qatar, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished second and Oscar Piastri, Norris' teammate, claimed third place. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari ended in sixth position. This outcome leaves McLaren with a 21-point advantage over Ferrari as they aim for their first Constructors' title since 1998.

Norris acknowledged his team's efforts by saying, "The team gave me a great car, so I'm thankful to the team." He added that he felt disappointed for not delivering better results and making their task harder than necessary. "The team are doing a great job but I've let them down," he admitted.

Norris had previously challenged Verstappen for the world championship before Verstappen clinched it in Las Vegas. Currently, Norris has 349 points, just eight more than Leclerc who is in third place. Both drivers are set to compete fiercely for individual and team honours in the season finale.

The final race of 2024 will be crucial for both McLaren and Ferrari as they battle for supremacy in Abu Dhabi. With only one race left, every point will count significantly towards determining this year's Constructors' Champion.
