Norris Asserts Piastri's Advantage Was Overestimated After Securing Pole Position At Belgian Grand Prix

Lando Norris believes Oscar Piastri's advantage in practice was exaggerated after he clinched pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix. Norris highlighted confidence in his performance and the competitive spirit within McLaren.

Lando Norris expressed that Oscar Piastri's perceived edge during practice at the Belgian Grand Prix was exaggerated. Norris secured pole position in qualifying, narrowly beating his McLaren teammate. He entered Formula One's mid-season break after winning the Austrian and British Grands Prix, reducing Piastri's lead in the drivers' championship standings.

Norris was slower than his title rival during Friday's practice and finished third in Saturday's sprint race, where Piastri lost out to Max Verstappen. However, Norris managed to outperform his teammate by just 0.085 seconds later that day. Piastri couldn't surpass Norris's strong first lap in Q3.

Norris Says Piastri's Gap Was Overestimated

In an interview with Sky Sports post-qualifying, Norris remarked, "Everyone was pretty worried after yesterday. I wasn't even that far off; it was just a couple of little issues that we had." He added that he felt confident coming into the day and was pleased to regain the top spot.

Norris explained that Friday's gap was due to slipstream and not being first out of the pit lane, which he considered insignificant. He noted that people tend to exaggerate situations but felt good about his performance. The car performed well all weekend, and both he and Oscar pushed each other significantly.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc secured third place in qualifying, while Verstappen fell to fourth due to mistakes on his final lap. Williams' Alex Albon claimed fifth position, followed by Mercedes' George Russell in sixth place. Yuki Tsunoda achieved seventh place for Red Bull, marking their second car's best qualifying performance this season.

The Racing Bulls duo of Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson took eighth and ninth positions respectively. Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten qualifiers. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton will start from 16th after being eliminated in the first session when his final lap time was deleted for exceeding track limits.
