Stavanger (Norway), Jun 3: The Indian siblings R Praggnanandhaa and R Vaishali encountered defeats in their respective matches in round 6 at the Norway Chess 2024 tournament.
Magnus Carlsen demonstrated his dominance by defeating an out-of-form Ding Liren to secure the lead with 12 points in this prestigious event on Sunday (June 2).

In another key match, Fabiano Caruana triumphed over fellow American Hikaru Nakamura, allowing Carlsen to emerge as the frontrunner in the six-player double round-robin competition, which boasts a total prize pool of USD 161,000.
Praggnanandhaa faced a tough challenge against France's Firouzja Alireza, losing in the Armageddon tiebreaker after struggling in the Classical game as well. Meanwhile, Vaishali was outplayed by the world women's champion, Wenjun Ju of China, who capitalized on an endgame advantage.
With four rounds remaining, Carlsen leads the pack with Nakamura close behind on 11 points, while Praggnanandhaa holds third place with 9.5 points. Alireza follows with 8 points, and Caruana is on 6.5 points. Ding Liren, struggling significantly, remains at the bottom with just 2.5 points, requiring a major turnaround to stay competitive.
In the women's section, Wenjun Ju seized the lead from Vaishali, tying with Ukraine's Anna Muzychuk, both standing at 10.5 points. Vaishali trails by just half a point. Lei Tingjie is fourth with 7 points, leading over Koneru Humpy, who suffered another loss to Pia Cramling of Sweden. Cramling, despite her victory, remains at the bottom with 4.5 points.
Carlsen, capitalising on his double bishops, launched a decisive offensive on the kingside against Ding Liren, finishing the game with a dramatic queen sacrifice following a blunder from the Chinese player.
Ding, who recently won the world championship against Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi, appeared far from his best form and will need significant improvement in his next match against India's D Gukesh.
Praggnanandhaa's challenge was marked by pressure from Alireza in the Classical game, resulting in a draw. However, in the Armageddon tiebreaker, the young Indian couldn't mount a comeback, leading to his defeat.
In the women's tournament, Vaishali had opportunities against Wenjun Ju but was ultimately outmanoeuvred in the minor pieces endgame. Ju's technical prowess ensured her victory, pushing her to the top of the standings.
The tournament, which runs through June 7, continues to promise exciting chess battles. Carlsen, with his recent form, appears poised to extend his lead, while the Indian participants aim to bounce back in the remaining rounds.
