Norway Chess 2026: Magnus Carlsen Defeats Gukesh Dommaraju; Firouzja, Assaubayeva Hold Leads After Round 4
Round 4 of Norway Chess 2026 in Oslo saw Magnus Carlsen defeat World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju with black in the key classical game. All other classical games, in both sections, ended drawn. Every board then used Armageddon, with leaders Alireza Firouzja and Bibisara Assaubayeva retaining their overall leads.
Carlsen and Gukesh fought a complex struggle, with balance holding early. The Norwegian gradually improved his position in the middlegame. Under time pressure, Gukesh could not find accurate defence. Carlsen converted his advantage cleanly, claiming an important classical win. The result gives him vital points after a slow start at home.

Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja played a careful strategic game. Neither side managed to create winning chances in the classical phase. The game ended level after steady play from both. In the Armageddon decider, So handled the clock better and prevailed. Firouzja, however, remains in overall tournament lead after four rounds.
Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu shared a balanced classical game. Both players had moments to press but could not break through. The position eventually simplified to a draw. In the Armageddon game, Praggnanandhaa seized his chance and won. That victory brought him useful extra points in the open standings.

Armageddon central in Norway Chess Women

The games were closely fought, with advantages shifting in complex middlegame positions. Defensive skills and clock control proved crucial as the extra points changed the table picture.
Koneru Humpy and Zhu Jiner traded chances in a tense game. Neither created a lasting edge, and peace was agreed. Zhu then won the Armageddon clash for extra points. World Champion Ju Wenjun held a slightly worse position against Bibisara Assaubayeva. Ju defended well, but Assaubayeva later captured the blitz decider.
Divya Deshmukh and Anna Muzychuk produced one of the round’s sharpest games. Divya built pressure and held the better middlegame chances. Muzychuk defended carefully and neutralised the threats. The classical game finished level. In Armageddon, Muzychuk struck back and won, adding valuable points to stay close to the leader.
Leaders and event format after four rounds
After round four, Alireza Firouzja leads the open event. Bibisara Assaubayeva heads Norway Chess Women, with Anna Muzychuk, Divya Deshmukh and Zhu Jiner close behind. Norway Chess 2026 runs in Oslo from 25 May to 5 June. Both six-player double-round-robin tournaments share equal prize funds and format.
Norway Chess features a classical game on each board every day. When that game ends in a draw, players contest an Armageddon tiebreak. One side receives more time, the other gets draw odds. This system guarantees a decisive match winner each round for both the open and women’s events.
