Norway Chess 2026: Divya Deshmukh wins all-Indian clash as Firouzja extends lead

Round two of Norway Chess 2026 produced another day of hard-fought contests, with Alireza Firouzja emerging as the biggest winner after claiming the only classical victory of the round.

The French grandmaster defeated Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu in a tense encounter, gradually tightening his grip from the middlegame before converting his advantage with clinical precision. The win marked Firouzja's second consecutive classical triumph and helped him extend his lead at the top of the standings.

The marquee matchup of the day between World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and Germany's Vincent Keymer ended in a draw after an absorbing battle. Carlsen appeared to hold the initiative for large stretches and entered the endgame with a slight edge, but Keymer defended stubbornly to secure a valuable half-point. The Norwegian, however, bounced back in Armageddon to collect the bonus point.

Meanwhile, reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju and Wesley So shared the points after a lengthy positional struggle that ended peacefully in classical play. So went on to defeat Gukesh in Armageddon and walked away with the additional point.

With back-to-back classical wins, Firouzja sits alone at the summit after two rounds of action.

Assaubayeva maintains lead in Norway Chess Women

The women's event witnessed another tightly contested round, with all three classical games finishing in draws before Armageddon determined the winners.

Tournament leader Bibisara Assaubayeva continued her impressive run by overcoming Zhu Jiner in Armageddon. After navigating a complex and balanced classical encounter, the Kazakh star held her nerve in the tiebreak to secure the extra point and preserve her lead.

In the all-Indian showdown, Divya Deshmukh edged past Humpy Koneru in Armageddon after their classical game ended level. The victory gave Divya valuable points in the standings and highlighted another strong performance from the young Indian talent.

Elsewhere, Anna Muzychuk defeated Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun in Armageddon following a drawn classical game to add bonus points to her tally.

After two rounds, Assaubayeva remains the player to beat in the Norway Chess Women standings.
