Norway Chess: Gukesh enjoys a Sail on Birthday with Star Names as Carlsen, Praggnanandhaa join Celebrations
A breezy afternoon on the Oslofjord turned Norway Chess 2026's rest day into a celebration of teamwork and relaxation, as the world's leading grandmasters swapped board tensions for sails.
In a special sailing edition of the Norway Chess Games, players divided into two teams for a friendly regatta that combined competition with camaraderie against Norway's scenic coastal backdrop.

The outing doubled as a birthday celebration for reigning world champion Gukesh D, who marked his 20th year amid cheers from teammates and rivals. The fleet included a distinguished and diverse lineup: Divya Deshmukh, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Magnus Carlsen, Vincent Keymer, Wesley So, Koneru Humpy, Anna Muzychuk, Bibisara Assaubayeva, Zhu Jiner, and Javokhir Sindarov - the latter set to challenge Gukesh for the World Championship - all taking part in the light-hearted race.
Norway Chess Games' rest-day activities are a hallmark of the tournament, designed to give players a break from intensive preparation while fostering friendships. Over the years the program has featured a variety of unconventional challenges: cook-offs, archery, fencing, and farm tasks such as tractor driving and cow milking. Last year's "Chess Cowboy Challenge" was another quirky highlight in this tradition of off-board diversion.

This edition of Norway Chess carries extra meaning as the event returns to Oslo after a 13-year run in Stavanger. The change of scenery has been complemented by cultural outreach: Indian grandmasters and tournament members later attended a reception hosted by the Ambassador of India to Norway in Oslo, strengthening sporting and diplomatic ties.
The sailing regatta - part sport, part social gathering - underscored the tournament's blend of high-level chess and community spirit, giving players a chance to recharge together before the resumption of fierce over-the-board battles.
