Nurse Justifies Decision To Bench Joel Embiid As Philadelphia 76ers Collapse In Fourth Quarter Against Nets

Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse defended his choice to bench Joel Embiid during the fourth quarter of a close game against the Brooklyn Nets. Despite a strong start, the team fell short, marking their seventh consecutive defeat.

The Philadelphia 76ers faced a narrow 105-103 loss to the Brooklyn Nets, with Joel Embiid sitting out the final quarter. Despite Embiid's 14 points in 31 minutes, he missed all six of his three-point attempts. The 76ers managed to overcome a 17-point deficit to briefly take the lead, but Nic Claxton's last-second shot sealed their seventh consecutive defeat.

Philadelphia's record now stands at 20-36, further diminishing their hopes for an NBA play-in tournament spot. Coach Nick Nurse expressed appreciation for Embiid's contributions, acknowledging that the star player is not performing at his peak. "He's giving us what he can. He's not himself, we all know that," Nurse stated.

Nurse Justifies Benching Embiid in Loss

Embiid has been grappling with issues in his left knee, which he believes need addressing to regain his dominant form. This season, the two-time NBA scoring champion has appeared in only 19 of the team's 56 games. Last season, he played just 39 games due to a torn meniscus.

Tyrese Maxey, a guard for the 76ers, praised Embiid's efforts despite his struggles. "I've probably seen him at his best," Maxey remarked about Embiid. He added that over the past four years, Embiid has consistently shown dominance on the court whenever he plays.

Nurse decided to keep Embiid on the bench during the decisive quarter because he felt the team had a good rhythm without him. "Just wanted to let them roll with it," Nurse explained after the game. The decision highlighted how Philadelphia is trying to adapt without relying solely on their star player.

The team's current performance reflects their ongoing challenges this season. With their recent loss against Brooklyn, Philadelphia's chances of making it into postseason play have dwindled further. The team must find ways to improve and secure more wins if they hope to turn their season around.

Nurse remains hopeful about Embiid's potential return to form once his knee issues are resolved. Meanwhile, Maxey continues to support his teammate by encouraging him through these tough times. "I just try to keep his head up," Maxey said, acknowledging Embiid's determination despite setbacks.
