This was the first time India had three finalists at the marquee event and it was also the first time an athlete from Odisha reached the final of a World Athletics Championships event as Kishore Jena showcased his talent and determination in Budapest.

Although he didn't win a medal, he finished fifth in the men's javelin final, leaving a lasting impression on sports enthusiasts in Odisha. Jena achieved his personal best throw of 84.77m during his fifth attempt, displaying exceptional ability in the sport.

A Historic Achievement for Odisha

Kishore Jena created history by becoming the first athlete from Odisha to compete in a final event at the prestigious World Athletics Championships. His remarkable performance and qualification for the finals have brought immense pride to his home state.

Journey to Finals despite Challenges

Despite facing challenges in the qualifying round, Kishore Jena's determination and perseverance secured him a place in the finals. He initially achieved a distance of 80.55m in his first attempt, followed by two less impressive throws.

He registered throws of 78.05m and a foul in his next two attempts in Group B of the qualification round. Jena, however, earned a well-deserved spot among the top athletes thanks to his overall performance.

Three Indians Shine in the World Championships

This year marked a significant milestone for Indian athletics as three athletes secured top-eight positions in an event at the World Championships.

Neeraj Chopra made history by winning India's first-ever gold medal, while DP Manu claimed sixth place with a throw of 84.14m. Kishore Jena also made his mark by finishing fifth with an impressive throw of 84.77m.

Jena started the final with an effort of 75.70m followed by 82.22m, which took him into the top eight, assuring himself three more throws before he registered a foul in his third attempt. In his fourth attempt, Jena registered 80.19m followed by his personal best of 84.77m in his fifth attempt.

In the final attempt, Jena registered another X as he looked to push himself into the medals. However, a fifth-place finish at the World Championships can be considered a great start for the athlete from Odisha as he aims for further success in the upcoming Asian Games 2023.
