Offshore sailing race starts from Jan 12

Kochi, Jan 9 (UNI) Eight teams would participate in the first 'truly offshore' sailing race organised by the Offshore Sailing Association of India (OSAI) here from January 12.

Speaking to newspersons today, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral Sunil K Damle said the championship spread over ten days would cover almost 600 nautical miles and had a total prize money of more than Rs one lakh.

The Ocean-leg of the race would start on January 13 in which the teams, consisting of five members, would have to put together their sailing skills, endurance and team work on J-24 boats and move towards Kavaratti on Lakshadweep Islands, where they would reach on January 17.

The second-leg of the race from Kavaratti to Kochi would be flagged off on Januray 19 and would reach here on January 23.

VAdm Damle, who is the President of the OSAI, said the association was taking steps to popularise the sport in other parts of the country.

Of the teams registered for the championship, two teams were from Tamil Nadu Sailing Association and one from the Kerala Yatching Association, besides teams from various Warermanship Training Centres of the Navy, he added.

OSAI, under the Yatching Association of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, would popularise ocean sailing in the country.

The race will be flagged off by Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
