Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, fresh from winning two gold medals at the World Indoor Championships, is set to testify against his father, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, in a high-profile abuse trial in Norway.
The case, unfolding in Sandnes, involves allegations of physical and emotional abuse spanning over a decade.

As per report from The Athletic, Gjert, a former coach to Jakob and his siblings, was charged with physical abuse in April 2024, with accusations of mistreatment towards his daughter, Ingrid, and son, Jakob.
It alleges that Gjert hit Ingrid with a towel, restricted her freedom, and regularly intimidated her. The accusations against Jakob detail incidents from 2008 to 2018, including being kicked off his scooter as a child and repeatedly threatened with violence, especially during his early racing years.
All seven Ingebrigtsen siblings are set to testify, making this trial unprecedented in Norway. More than 30 witnesses will be called, and evidence from their widely followed reality show, Team Ingebrigtsen, will be used in court. Gjert denies all allegations, claiming his coaching style was strict but not abusive.
Jakob and his brothers publicly denounced their father in 2023, describing his behavior as aggressive and controlling. They expressed the emotional toll it had taken, with Jakob stating that the joy of athletics had been drained from him. The trial is being held in open court, except for Ingrid's testimony, which will be heard behind closed doors.
Gjert could face up to six years in prison if found guilty. The verdict is expected in early June, coinciding with the lead-up to the outdoor athletics season and the Tokyo World Championships in September.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a Norwegian middle-distance runner and one of the most dominant figures in athletics. He is a two-time Olympic champion, winning gold in the 1,500m at the Tokyo Olympics and the 5,000m at the Paris Olympics. Holding multiple world records, he has established himself as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of his generation.
