Olympics 2024: Charlotte Dujardin Banned from Paris Games Amid Animal Cruelty Allegations

By Rishab VM

Team GB's star equestrian and six-time Olympic medallist, Charlotte Dujardin, has been banned from the Paris Olympics 2024 following a video that has led to her provisional suspension.

The footage, which emerged from an incident four years ago, allegedly shows Dujardin striking a horse's leg several times, an action deemed contrary to the principles of horse welfare by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI).

As per a report from skysports, Dujardin, a three-time Olympic champion and one of Britain's most decorated female Olympians, acknowledged her mistake and expressed remorse.

"A video has emerged from four years ago which shows me making an error of judgement during a coaching session," Charlotte stated.

"What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment," she added.

The incident, captured during a training session at a private stable, was submitted by a lawyer representing an undisclosed complainant.

Following the submission, the FEI moved swiftly, provisionally suspending Dujardin for six months. This decision precludes her participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games or any other FEI-regulated events.

"This decision renders her ineligible to participate in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games or any other events under the jurisdiction of the FEI," read the FEI's statement.

Dujardin's Olympic Achievements

Dujardin's suspension marks a significant blow to Team GB's equestrian team. She was slated to compete in both the individual dressage and team events alongside Carl Hester and world champion Lottie Fry.

Her record includes gold medals in team and individual dressage at London 2012 and Rio 2016, as well as bronze medals in both categories at Tokyo 2020.

This outstanding track record had placed her on the brink of becoming Britain's most decorated female Olympian, a title she shares with cyclist Laura Kenny, both holding six Olympic medals.

The FEI's president, Ingmar De Vos, underscored the importance of upholding equine welfare, particularly as the Olympic Games draw near.

"We are deeply disappointed with this case, especially as we approach the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. However, it is our responsibility and crucial that we address any instances of abuse, as equine welfare cannot be compromised," he said.

De Vos also acknowledged Dujardin's remorse and cooperation, emphasizing the FEI's commitment to the welfare of equine partners and the integrity of the sport.

Dujardin has pledged full cooperation with the FEI, British Equestrian Federation, and British Dressage during the ongoing investigation.

"I will cooperate fully with the FEI, British Equestrian Federation, and British Dressage during their investigations, and will not be commenting further until the process is complete," she declared in her statement.

Impact on Team GB and Replacement

The video has not only shocked the equestrian community but also led to widespread disappointment among fans and the British Olympic contingent.

Dujardin's suspension has paved the way for Becky Moody and her horse Jagerbomb to step in as the traveling reserve. This will be Moody's first appearance at the Olympics, marking a significant shift in the team's dynamics just days before the opening ceremony.

As the equestrian world awaits the outcome of the investigation, Dujardin's legacy, built on years of unparalleled success, faces a moment of intense scrutiny.

Her absence from Paris 2024 will undoubtedly be felt, but the suspension reflects a commitment to accountability and the welfare of the sport's most cherished participants - the horses.
