Olympics 2024 Gold Medalist Women's Boxer Imane Khelif identified as Male; Leaked Medical report shows Micropenis and XY Chromosomes

Imane Khelif, the much controversial Olympic Gold medalist boxer has landed in fresh controversy, which may have serious repercussions.

In a startling twist that has sent shockwaves through the sports community, the Algerian boxing sensation is likely to be in the ring of fire with another allegation of her sexual/biological identity.

Imane Khel

This follows a previous gender-related dispute surrounding her triumph at the Paris Olympics. The latest issue has emerged when a bombshell medical report was leaked, revealing sensitive and deeply personal information about Imane Khelif's biological condition.

What is the new Imane Khelif Report?

The report, obtained by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia, claims that Khelif is affected by 5-alpha reductase deficiency, a genetic condition that affects sexual development typically found in individuals assigned male at birth. This medical document, dated June 2023, is said to have resulted from a collaboration between the Kremlin-Bicetre Hospital in Paris and the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers.

Amine Khelif Controversy: What does the Medical Report Say and What does it Mean?

Details from the leaked report paint a vivid picture of Khelif's unique biological makeup. Accompanying an MRI examination, the report indicates that Khelif does not possess a uterus; instead, she has internal testicles and a "micropenis" that resembles an enlarged clitoris.

The findings extend to chromosomal tests, which confirm that Khelif has an XY karyotype, an attribute traditionally associated with males. A hormonal analysis further revealed that her testosterone levels align with those typically found in male athletes, raising questions about the fairness of her participation in women's boxing competitions.

Ait Aoudia disclosed that based on these results, there were suggestions that Khelif's parents could be related by blood. Moreover, the medical team advised surgical and hormonal treatment for Khelif, in addition to psychological support to address her condition.

What happens in 5-alpha reductase deficiency?

First of all, 5-alpha reductase is an enzyme. An enzyme is a bio-chemical which accelerates certain physicochemical reactions in any living form's body.

5-alpha reductase is typically observed in normal Males. Its main function is to convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, the male-specific sexual hormone in humans.

Any deficiency of the enzyme halts the normal sexual development of an embryo, which leads to complications in identifying the sex during birth. Many newborns with this condition are identified as female but they possess male-like attributes during growth.

The formation of muscular growth, hair growth and absence of breast tissue are typical findings among the people with 5-alpha reductase deficiency. Also, the person's voice is usually deeper, along with broad shoulders and sometimes a bifid scrotum which are its other striking features.

Did Imane Khelif take Unfair Advantage?

These revelations threaten to reignite the already heated debate about gender classification in sports. The implications of Khelif's situation are profound; her medical condition, as suggested by some, may confer "unfair advantages" in terms of strength and physical capabilities.

Khelif, who was nonetheless assigned female at birth and holds a female identification on her passport, meets International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations for eligibility. The tension surrounding her participation escalated last year when she was disqualified from the finals of the 2023 World Championships due to elevated testosterone levels. The Algerian then described it as a conspiracy against her.

But the new findings must stir the issue again. Objections against Khelif's sexual identity are not new and it is to be seen how IOA responds to the revelations.
