In a significant escalation of tensions, Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz has issued a stern warning to his French counterpart regarding a potential threat from Iran. Katz's concerns were communicated to Stéphane Séjourné, France's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
The remarks come in the wake of recent disruptions in France, which he attributes to Iranian-backed elements targeting Israeli athletes and tourists during the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024.

On Friday, the French train operator SNCF reported severe disruptions to its high-speed rail network, citing "malicious acts," including arson attacks. The incidents, which occurred just hours before the highly anticipated Olympic opening ceremony, have led to widespread travel chaos, with up to 800,000 passengers expected to face significant delays and cancellations over the weekend. This disruption has cast a shadow over the start of what is set to be a global sporting spectacle.
In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Katz claimed that these attacks are part of a broader plot orchestrated by Iran and its allies.
"The sabotage of railway infrastructure across France ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics was planned and executed under the influence of Iran's axis of evil and radical Islam," Katz asserted.
He further noted that he had previously alerted French authorities to potential threats against Israeli athletes.
Katz's comments underscore a heightened state of alert, with Israel urging France to bolster its security measures.
"As I warned my French counterpart Stéphane Séjourné this week, based on information held by Israel, Iranians are planning terrorist attacks against the Israeli delegation and all Olympic participants," he continued. Katz's call to action reflects growing concerns over the safety of athletes and tourists amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
In response to the heightened threat level, French authorities have implemented stringent security measures. One of the most notable is the complete closure of airspace around Paris during the opening ceremony of the Olympics. From 5:30 PM to midnight on July 26th, all air traffic will be banned within a 150-kilometer radius of the French capital. This unprecedented move includes the closure of major Parisian airports- Charles de Gaulle, Orly, Le Bourget, and Beauvais-to ensure maximum security for the event.
