Olympics 2024 Medal Winner: Who Won India's First Medal at the Paris Olympic Games?

The shooting contingent opened India's account in Olympics 2024 medal tally on day 2 of the Paris Olympic Games following the 10m Air Pistol final event at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre on Sunday (July 28).

After the 10m Rifle Mixed Teams failed to reach the medal round on Saturday (July 27), the lone shooter, who qualified for the final event in 10m Air Pistol event, put behind the disappointment of the Indian 24 hours later to win the country's first medal at the Paris Olympics.

Who won India's first medal at the Paris Olympics 2024?

Young shooter Manu Bhaker opened India's tally in the Paris Olympics medal table with a bronze after finishing third in the Women's 10m Air Pistol event on Sunday (July 28). She becomes the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting.

Bhaker, who was well set to take home a silver, had to settle for bronze after a lapse in the final two shots, finishing with a total of 221.7. Korean duo of Oh Ye-jin and Kim Ye-ji clinched the gold and silver medals respectively.

The young Indian had earlier qualified for the final with a total of 580-27x, finishing in the third position in Saturday's Qualification, which also saw her compatriot Rhythm Sangwan miss out on the final place after she finished 15th with a total of 573-14x.

As for Bhaker, this is a redemption for the young shooter after she failed to qualify for the final in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics three years ago. She will hope to finish with more medals and a different colour if possible in the coming days.

The 22-year-old Bhaker will look to add another medal to her tally when she joins forces with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event, which starts with a qualification round on Monday (July 29) followed by the final on Tuesday (July 30).

Rhythm also will be in aciton at the mixed team events alongside Arjun Cheema, who along with Sarabjot had failed to qualify for the men's final on Saturday (July 27). Bhaker will also be competing in the Women's 25m pistol event, scheduled to be held on August 2 and 3.

Apart from Bhaker, the women's archery team of Deepika Kumari, Anjali Bhakat and Bhajan Kaur also will be in medal contention on Sunday (July 28) should the Indian trio get past the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
