Olympics 2024: Who is Li Qian? Know all about Lovlina Borgohain’s opponent in Boxing Quarterfinals

By Triyasha Chatterjee

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain stands on the brink of achieving an unprecedented feat for Indian pugilists at the Olympics. Already a bronze medallist from the Tokyo Games in the 69kg category, she now sets her sights on a second medal, this time in the 75kg category in Paris. Ahead of her game let us take a detailed look at her rival Li Qian.

Li Qian, a formidable force in the world of boxing, has established herself as one of the top-seeded competitors in the 75kg weight category at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her impressive career is marked by numerous accolades and consistent performances on the international stage, making her a favourite for a medal in Paris.

Li Qian

Born in China, Li Qian's journey in boxing began at a young age, and she quickly rose through the ranks to become a dominant figure in the sport. Her Olympic track record is a testament to her skill and perseverance. She secured a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and followed it up with a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. These achievements alone highlight her as a seasoned competitor with a wealth of experience.

Li Qian's success extends beyond the Olympics. She is the reigning Asian Games champion, having bested Lovlina Borgohain in the final in China last year. Additionally, her accolades include a gold medal at the 2018 World Championships, showcasing her ability to perform at the highest level. Her medal tally at the World Championships is equally impressive, with a silver in 2014 and another bronze in 2023, underscoring her consistent presence at the pinnacle of the sport.

Moreover, Li Qian has demonstrated her prowess in the Asian Championships, where she has amassed three medals: two golds in 2017 and 2019, and a silver in 2015. Her silver medal at the 2014 Asian Games further cements her status as a top-tier boxer in the region.

Her encounters with Lovlina Borgohain have been noteworthy. While Lovlina managed to defeat Li Qian en route to her World Championship title last year in Delhi, Li Qian has since reclaimed her dominance, defeating Lovlina in both the Asian Games final and the Grand Prix of Czechia this year. These bouts illustrate the competitive rivalry between the two athletes and set the stage for another thrilling encounter at the Paris Olympics.
