In a remarkable tale of perseverance and passion, Zhiying Zeng is set to make her Olympic debut at the age of 58, representing Chile in table tennis. Born in China, Zeng's journey to the Olympics has been a long and winding one, spanning over four decades.
Zeng's love affair with table tennis began in her youth, playing for a professional team in China during the 1970s. However, life took her in a different direction, and she moved to Chile 35 years ago. Despite putting her playing career on hold, Zeng's passion for the sport never wavered.

Fast forward to the present, and Zeng's dedication has paid off. She has qualified for the Olympics after winning a series of tournaments, including the Latin American Olympic qualification event.
Zeng, while speaking to The Guardian, revealed that the rule of 'two-colour rule' for peddles ended her hopes of pursuing the sports. The rules were brought in to predict the speed and spin of the ball. Zeng decided to move on from the game despite selection for the China national Table Tennis team.
"The rule killed my game. I felt weak, psychologically and technically. I wasn't thinking about being a professional player anymore," Zeng said.
And then she moved to Chile and started her journey again. Zeng's son's addiction to video games made her hold the bat again, as she would play with her son to make him more active physically. But soon after, she retired and after two decades, the pandemic made her resumption.
The 58-year-old is known as 'Tania' to her Chilean friends. Chile hosted the Pan-American Games in 2023 and Zeng was the oldest athlete and won a medal as well. She also won the Sudamericanos and with a stellar record, she will be heading to Paris. And ahead of the Olympics, Zeng asserted the importance of happiness.
"At my age, you have to play with happiness, not anguish. I love this country. I didn't reach my dream in China, and I have here. It's important not to give up," she added.
Zeng's Olympic debut will be a historic moment for Chile, marking the country's first-ever representation in table tennis at the Games. She is also known as 'Tia Tania' among the youths in Chile, where 'Tia' means Aunt.
Zeng's remarkable journey is a reminder that it's never too late to chase dreams, and that with passion and dedication, we can achieve greatness at any age. As she takes the stage in the Olympics, Zhiying Zeng will be an inspiration to us all, showing us that with hard work and happiness, anything is possible.
