Number-two ranked atomweight MMA contender Denice Zamboanga just can't catch a break. For the second time in her ONE Championship career, "The Menace" reached world title contention only for the opportunity to slip through the cracks.
Zamboanga was set to clash with three-sport ONE Atomweight World Champion Stamp Fairtex in this Saturday's main event at ONE 167: Tawanchai vs. Nattawut II on 8 June at Bangkok, Thailand's Impact Arena. That was until Stamp suffered a knee injury two weeks ago, ruling her out of action.

But rather than wait on the side for the Thai queen to return, Zamboanga sought other options. Instead, she wants to solidify herself against all comers, and that means taking a short-notice bout against Noelle Grandjean instead.
"It's definitely challenging to face a different opponent so close to the fight, but I'm focused and ready. My mentality is to adapt and overcome," Zamboanga said. "Every fight is an opportunity to show my skills and resilience, regardless of who is standing across from me."
Going from training for Stamp in a World Title bout for weeks on end to adapting your game for a completely different fighter on a few weeks' notice is a huge transition, even for a fighter as accomplished as "The Menace."
Adapting to situations and overcoming odds seems to be what this camp is all about. Many fighters would feel disillusioned after a second consecutive World Title opportunity has fallen apart. But not Zamboanga. She recognises Grandjean's abilities, and she knows how rewarding a victory will be given the situation.
"The shift in preparation has been significant. Training for Stamp meant focusing heavily on striking and Muay Thai techniques. With Noelle, I've had to adjust my game plan to focus more on grappling and takedown defense. It's a different challenge, but I'm confident in my training and my ability to adapt," Zamboanga said.
"I'm incredibly motivated. This is my chance to prove that I'm ready for a title shot, regardless of the opponent. Every fight is a step towards my ultimate goal, and I'm determined to show that I deserve to be in contention for the belt. My motivation is higher than ever, and I'm ready to give it my all in the cage."
