ONE Fight Night 15: Ilya Freymanov Faces Acid Test In Thanh Le

Ilya Freymanov's trajectory to the upper echelon of ONE Championship's featherweight MMA division has been meteoric. The Russian star has thwarted two fiery tests to become the #3-ranked contender. And at ONE Fight Night 15, he'll meet his toughest adversary yet.

Freymanov faces former ONE Featherweight MMA World Champion and current #1-ranked contender Thanh Le in the main event this Saturday, 7 October. But what makes this bout so pivotal is that the weight bracket's interim gold will be up for grabs inside Bangkok, Thailand's Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

The 27-year-old presents a formidable fighting style that's helped him join the division's elite in just two promotional appearances. Even in his debut at ONE on Prime Video 2 in October 2022, Freymanov was thrown into the lion's den against former two-weight ONE World Champion Martin Nguyen.

Freymanov had no easy welcome. No tune-up fight to find his groove in ONE. But stunningly, the hot new arrival passed the test with flying colors. Freymanov battered and bruised Nguyen inside one round to earn the knockout finish and mark his arrival in the world's largest martial arts organization.

It was a sink or swim matchup. Freymanov proved he could not only tread water with the best of them, but that he could take them into deep waters and come out on top. And after just one bout, the Russian snuck into the featherweight division's top-five rankings.

While he made light work of Nguyen, Freymanov's stiffest night's work so far came at the hands of Shinechagtga Zoltsetseg this past June at ONE Fight Night 11. What followed when the bell rang was a one-round firefight.

Zoltsetseg has a reputation as one of the most unorthodox fighters around, and he certainly showed that against Freymanov. In fact, the Mongolian powder keg even managed to put the Russian star down within 25 seconds of the fight.

The 14-fight veteran managed to weather Zoltsetseg's storm, though. Surviving a blitzing that would've toppled many a fighter, Freymanov proved his durability. After taking everything Zoltsetseg had, he turned the tables to sink in a rear-naked choke at 2:18 in a memorable one-round war.

With that said, Le is a whole different kettle of fish. With five stoppages in six promotional outings, the Vietnamese-American's repertoire is just as frightening. In fact, his trail of destruction speaks for itself.

En route to winning the ONE Featherweight MMA World Title from Nguyen at ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX in October 2020, Le demolished Yusup Saadulaev, Kotetsu Boku, and Ryogo Takahashi - all by knockout.

Le then added another highlight to the reel after starching former unbeaten star Garry Tonon inside a minute at the fittingly named ONE: LIGHTS OUT event in March 2022. Unfortunately, Le lost the gold to Tang Kai in August 2020, but he was determined to cement his #1 contender spot.

Undoubtedly, the well-rounded former champ will offer a multitude of problems to Freymanov. But excitingly, a contest that mixes Le's ferocity with Freymanov's own firepower is likely to cause an explosion of styles inside Lumpinee Stadium.

This will be the biggest assignment for Freymanov. He's beaten one former World Champion already. But Le will be his acid test. If he can manage to surpass the 38-year-old, ONE may have another Russian phenom on its hands.
