ONE Fight Night 22: Natalia Diachkova Promises To Usher In New Era Against Smilla Sundell

By Mike Joseph

So far in her ONE Championship tenure, Natalia Diachkova has struck with as much venom as one can produce. And now she's ready to strike again, this time against ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion Smilla Sundell.

Diachkova will try to snatch Sundell's crown in the main event of ONE Fight Night 22: Sundell vs. Diachkova on Saturday, 4 May, inside Bangkok, Thailand's iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

But much like Diachkova, Sundell has struck with her share of venomous bites. She has dominated her opponents to go 4-0 in ONE, and she's still just 19 years old. Diachkova, however, feels Sundell is too immature to hold the belt - and the Russian plans to expose her next week.

"Her age doesn't really matter. I won the [Russian] National Adult Championship when I was 16 years old. But mentally, she is still a child," Diachkova said.

"She doesn't know how to use her long limbs. It will be a problem for her when she fights me because her previous opponents were [a lot] shorter. This is an important factor in a fight if you don't have enough experience and understanding of how to work it."

Coming in 10 years older, Diachkova believes her abilities are much more advanced than Sundell's. The Russian wrecker has destroyed three of her four opponents within the distance, and that's kept her from being able to show what she can truly do.

So, when she locks horns with Sundell in the main event of ONE Fight Night 22, Diachkova promises that the combat sports world is in for a shock. After all, she insists that she'll stop the Swedish star and become the new ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion.

"I have many advantages. I am underestimated in the clinch and generally in everything that I have not yet had time to show. My advantages are my hard punches and working with combinations, as well as my experience," Diachkova said.

"This is how the fight will go: I will follow the plan. I will remain focused and cold-blooded. I will fight smart. If I connect and hit her - and I will - I will finish her."
