Sean Sweeney Named Orlando Magic Head Coach After Spurs Stint
San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney is set to take charge as the new Orlando Magic head coach, according to multiple reports on Friday. The 41-year-old coach is finalising contract details, stepping into the role left open when the Magic dismissed Jamahl Mosley earlier in the month.
The appointment comes at a key stage for Orlando, whose growth has appeared to stall after three straight first-round exits. Sweeney will be asked to guide a young core through the next phase, turning development promise into deeper playoff runs in a competitive Eastern Conference.

Orlando reshaped the roster last offseason by adding Desmond Bane to a foundation already featuring Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Despite that move, the overall outcome did not change, with the Magic again falling at the opening playoff hurdle and raising questions about their trajectory.
Those concerns were highlighted in the latest postseason run. Orlando raced to a 3-1 advantage against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, seemingly in control of the series. The Magic then dropped three consecutive games, exiting after defeats by an average margin of 14.3 points.
| Season | Orlando Magic playoff result |
|---|---|
| Last three seasons | Eliminated in first round each year |
| Most recent series | Lost 4-3 to Detroit Pistons after leading 3-1 |
Sweeney arrives with a strong reputation for defensive planning but will be expected to lift Orlando’s performance at both ends. The Eastern Conference continues to deepen in quality, so the Magic are turning to Sweeney’s tactical detail to sharpen schemes around Banchero, Wagner and Bane.
Before this season, San Antonio promoted Sweeney to associate head coach under Mitch Johnson, marking another step in a steady rise. Earlier in the career, Sweeney spent two seasons working as a video coordinator, building a base in scouting and game preparation before moving onto NBA benches.
Across the last 13 years, Sweeney has served as an assistant coach with several NBA teams. During that period, Sweeney learned under Avery Johnson, PJ Carlesimo and Jason Kidd, among others, gaining experience with different systems and locker rooms that will now inform decisions in Orlando.
Sweeney is expected to remain with the Spurs until the end of their current campaign. Game 7 of the Western Conference finals is scheduled for Saturday night, and Sweeney will continue in the assistant role before fully turning attention to duties as Orlando Magic head coach.
The hiring process in Orlando included several well-known figures, with Billy Donovan and Jeff Van Gundy among the candidates considered. Reports indicate Sweeney ultimately won the race for the job, placing long-term development and defensive identity at the centre of the Magic’s new direction.
