Orlando Magic Fire Jamahl Mosley After First-Round Playoff Exit

Jamahl Mosley lost the Orlando Magic head coach job on Monday, less than a day after Game 7. Orlando fell 116-94 to the Detroit Pistons, ending a first-round series where the Magic had once led 3-1 against the top seed.

The defeat finished a painful collapse for eighth-seeded Orlando, which stood close to a first Eastern Conference semi-final since 2010. Instead, the Magic’s third straight play-off appearance under Mosley again stopped in the opening round.

The turning point appeared in Game 6 on Orlando’s home court. The Magic were ahead by 24 points in the second half but scored only 19 points after the break. Detroit recovered to win 93-79, a result that heavily increased pressure on Mosley.

Mosley had guided Orlando for five seasons, starting with the 2021-22 campaign. That first year brought a 22-60 record as the roster developed. The following three seasons all finished at .500 or better, yet none progressed beyond the first play-off round.

Across those five seasons, Mosley collected 189 regular-season wins. That total ranks third in franchise history, behind Brian Hill with 267 victories and Stan Van Gundy with 259. The decision therefore moves on from one of the Magic’s longest-serving coaches.

Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman released a statement on Monday about the move. Weltman thanked Mosley for work with the team and acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways after steady improvement in results and repeated play-off qualification.

With the change confirmed, Orlando now enters an important search for a replacement coach. The next hire will inherit a squad that has shown progress but failed to close out a 3-1 series lead, a factor likely to shape expectations inside the organisation.

The franchise confirmed the decision on social media on 4 May 2026, posting an announcement about Mosley’s dismissal. That message underlined that Orlando is now seeking what Weltman described as "a new voice and fresh perspective" after the first-round exit.

Mosley leaves with a strong place in Orlando’s record books but without a series win. The Magic, having blown a 3-1 advantage against Detroit and missed a chance to advance at home, now shift focus toward appointing leadership for the next phase.
