Oscar Piastri Tops Dramatic Japanese Grand Prix Second Practice Amid Jack Doohan Crash

In a tumultuous second practice for the Japanese Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri secured the fastest time while Jack Doohan's crash caused significant interruptions. Despite challenges from gusty winds and track conditions, McLaren drivers showed strong performance ahead of qualifying.

Oscar Piastri emerged as the fastest driver in a turbulent second practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix. The session was marked by four red flags, including one due to a significant crash involving Jack Doohan. Piastri clocked a time of 1:28.114, narrowly beating his McLaren teammate Lando Norris by 0.049 seconds. Despite the disruptions, McLaren maintained their strong early-season form.

The practice session was cut short to just 20 minutes of actual driving due to multiple interruptions. Jack Doohan's crash at a high-speed corner resulted in him losing control and hitting the barrier, causing a delay of about 20 minutes. Fortunately, Alpine later confirmed that Doohan was unharmed and did not suffer any concussion after being checked at the medical centre.

Piastri Leads in Chaotic Japanese GP Practice

Despite limited track time, Piastri managed to outperform Norris, who had led the first practice session. Other teams struggled to match McLaren's pace this season. However, Piastri cautioned his team against complacency, noting that resurfacing parts of the track and gusty winds made conditions tricky. "When it’s gusty, you don’t have the same car two laps in a row," he explained.

The session saw further disruptions when Fernando Alonso spun off into gravel due to windy conditions. Additionally, sparks from cars ignited grass beside the track, causing two more red flags. These incidents highlighted the challenging conditions drivers faced throughout the day.

Piastri expressed confidence in McLaren's pace for the weekend but acknowledged areas needing improvement. He noted Mercedes' speed despite their struggles on soft tyres during this session. "I’m confident we have good pace for the rest of the weekend," he stated while emphasising vigilance against competitors.

Lando Norris also remains cautious about Mercedes' potential threat in qualifying despite their current lead position. "George was very quick this morning," Norris remarked about George Russell's performance in first practice. He anticipates a close battle with Mercedes during qualifying.

Racing Bulls drivers Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson secured third and fifth positions respectively, with Lewis Hamilton positioned between them. George Russell ended sixth after finishing second in first practice, trailing Piastri by 0.453 seconds.

Norris observed that Red Bull seemed off pace but expected them to improve during qualifying sessions as they often do. He described FP2 as messy compared to FP1 where teams appeared more orderly.

The competitive nature of this season continues as teams prepare for qualifying under challenging conditions at Suzuka Circuit.
