Otters Million Open Squash tournament 2007
Mumbai, May 20 (UNI) Egypt's Samy Farrag, England's Mandy Kennedy and Mexico's Temo Gomez swept away their respective opponents at the finals of the Otters Million Open Squash tournament here at the Otters Club, Bandra.
Sixth seed Samy Farrag, here on a coaching stint, ensured his trip to the city was rewarding when he needed just half an hour to demolish fourth seed Parthiban Aiyappan of Chennai 9-3, 9-0, 9-1 to bag the Men's Open title, yesterday.
Top seed Mandy Kennedy, a former junior England player, denied Ankita Sharma a double crown, when she overcame the second seed 9-2, 9-7, 9-1 for the women's crown in a final that had its brief moments of excitement in the second game as Sharma ran Kennedy close.
Mexico's Temo Gomez, also on a coaching stint in the city, endured an early challenge from the CCI's Rohit More to clinch the Professionals title with a 10-8, 9-2, 9-2 victory that completed the domination of the foreign brigade.
In the women's final, the experience and maturity of Kennedy proved decisive as she denied Sharma a double title, after the latter clinched the girls' under-15 title with an upset 9-0, 9-5, 9-3 win over No one seed Dheeya Somaiya.
In turn, the unseeded Sharma denied Somaiya a double crown after the latter lived up to her reputation as the top seed to snatch the girls' under-17 crown with an exciting 9-6, 9-3, 9-7 victory over No three seed Shria Khatri.
But Rishi Jalan was the toast of the finals as he bagged the boys' under-19 and under-17 titles against the same opponent, Karm Kumar.
Jalan ignored the early deficit after dropping the opening game and rallied to a thrilling 6-9, 9-1, 9-7, 9-5 victory for the under-19 crown.
Inspired by that win and in supreme confidence, he returned to demolish Kumar 9-0, 9-2, 9-2 for the under-17 title.
Top junior on the circuit and the No one seed here, Abhishek Pradhan crushed arch-rival Aakash Borwankar 9-1, 9-0, 9-4 to claim the boys' under-15 title.
