Outstation players keen to represent Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jan 24 (PTI) Besides World Boxing Champion MaryKom, some more sportspersons have applied to representJharkhand in various events in the 34th National Gamesbeginning February 12, the organisers said.

"It is a fundamental right of a sportsperson to representany state in the National Games with permission (of theauthorities concerned). Some players have applied (torepresent Jharkhand various events) six months ago," S MHashmi, Organising Secretary of the National Games OrganisingCommittee, said here today.

"We have not calculated the exact figure," he said whenasked how many outstation sportspersons would representJharkhand.

The five-time world boxing champion, Mary Kom, hadyesterday said she was keen to represent Jharkhand and spoketo Jharkhand Boxing Association general secretary in thisregard.

Earlier in the day, a team from Indian OlympicAssociation, led by its President Suresh Kalmadi along withHashmi, took stock of the preparation of the games andconfirmed that the games would be held as per scheduled.

Incidentally, both Kalmadi and Hashmi are facinginquiries in connection with alleged financial irregularities.

While Kalmadi is facing inquiry from the CBI in the CWGscam, the vigilance bureau had last year lodged an FIR againstHashmi and a couple of other NGOC members on charges offinancial irregularities.

After being postponed seven times, the National Gameswill be held from February 12 to 26 mainly at the Mega SportsComplex housing in Ranchi. Some events, however, will be heldin Jamshedpur and Dhanbad.
