Over Rs 22 crore cash awards for CWG, Asian Games medallists

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) The Ministry of Youth Affairs andSports has sanctioned cash awards of worth Rs 22.57 crore to286 sportspersons who have won medals for the country in thelast year''s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

These sportspersons would be given the cash awards underthe scheme of Special Awards to winners of medals inInternational Sports events.

The award money for the medallists in Commonwealth Gamesand Asian Games was doubled in October 2010.

Under the scheme, gold medallists have been sanctionedcash awards of Rs 20 lakh, silver medallists of Rs 10 lakh andbronze medallists Rs 6 lakh.

Medal winners in team events have been given award money,which is not less than 50 per cent of individual award money.

Cash awards worth Rs 5.10 crore has already been given tothe sportspersons, who won gold medals for India in the 16thAsian Games held at Guangzhou, China in November last year.
