Oz quick bowlers to pick up pace for the Ashes

By Super Admin

Leicester (UK), June 11 (ANI): Australia's fast bowlers will embark on an intensive Ashes preparation program after their early exit from the World Twenty20 championships.

"I feel we have enough cricket time, remembering that we have back-to-back Tests. The challenge will be to ensure that we're still playing at our best on the fifth day of the second Test rather than peaking for the first day and then being worn out or overripe," The Age quoted team coach Tim Nielsen, as saying.

Nielsen said it was imperative all fast bowlers use the next fortnight to crank up their bowling workload in the absence of any other cricket.

"If there is one benefit (of the bad Twenty20 result), it is that we can now start getting some miles into our quicks' legs," he said.

"When we're playing in a world championship, we are obviously preparing specifically for those games and it was about short, sharp bursts and being able to bowl at any stage, bowling six balls in a spell and being ready to execute deliveries straight up.

Now, we can actually give them some good, hard hit-outs and bowl six eight-over spells at training. While it's not perfect that we're not in the Twenty20 stuff, we still have the two tour games, where we will get four days of hard cricket and get plenty of bowling into them," he added.

Nielsen admitted that Brett Lee would have to make a big adjustment from Twenty20 cricket to Test cricket to be ready.

"There is going to be a big lead-in to the first Test as far as getting his volume up and getting back into the rhythm of bowling, not just 24 balls in a competitive environment, but 95, 100, 110 balls in a day," Nielsen said.

"It's a big change (but) I feel as though he is progressing well," he added.

Lee and Clark will be fighting for places in the attack alongside the indispensable Mitchell Johnson, after the strong performances of Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus in South Africa. (ANI)
