Turku (Finland), Jun 17: Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic and world champion in javelin throw, is making his comeback at the Paavo Nurmi Games 2024 here on Tuesday (June 18). This competition is another step in his preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Chopra, 26, had a brief break to heal from a minor injury. He'll face tough competition from 19-year-old German thrower Max Dehning, the youngest member of the prestigious 90-meter club. Dehning is expected to be a major challenger for Chopra at the Paris Games.

Oliver Helander, the local favourite who beat Chopra in 2022, will also be competing. Last year, Chopra took silver with a personal best throw of 89.30m, which he later surpassed with an 89.94m throw at the Stockholm Diamond League.
Other strong contenders include two-time world champion Anderson Peters from Grenada and 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago. Also Read: Neeraj Chopra: Olympic Champ Reveals Favourite Movies and Pre-Javelin Throw Playlist
Chopra withdrew from the Ostrava Golden Spike last month as a precaution after experiencing discomfort in his adductors. He started his season with a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May, throwing 88.36m, his ninth-best mark ever.
Jakub Vadlejch, who won in Doha, won't be participating in the Paavo Nurmi Games. Chopra also won the gold medal at the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar with a throw of 82.27m.
Following the Paavo Nurmi Games, Chopra will compete in the Paris Diamond League on July 7th. He's chosen to skip the National Inter-State Athletics in Panchkula at the end of June to avoid overloading his schedule before the Olympics.
"We'll decide on further competitions based on the situation and how my body feels. Otherwise, Paris will be next," Chopra said after the Federation Cup.
