Pak weightlifters decide to participate in CWG

By Abdul Nisar
New Delhi, Oct 4: After the flag controversy and boycott threaten, Pakistan weightlifting team has decided to participate in the Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010.

"We have decided to compete just because we are representing our country," said Rashid Mehmood, Pakistan team manager.

Pakistan weightlifters called off their boycott threat after Pakistan Olympic Association chief Arif Hasan assured them that Muhammad Ali Shah would be punished.

During the opening ceremony of CWG, one of the Pakistan official took the honour of carrying their national flag instead of nominated weightlifter Shujauddin Malik, the 2006 gold medalist. The weightlifting team coach Sheikh Rashid told that Shah, who heads the Pakistan squad, decided to carry the flag to the opening ceremony of CWG by saying it was chief-de-mission's right to lead the contingent.

Later weightlifting team threatened to pull out of the Games. Sheikh Rashid told the media that weightlifters will not participate in the events. He also added that several other athletes and Indian officials were witness to the spat between them and Shah.
