Pam Shriver, Kawhi Leonard, and More: How Los Angeles Wildfire Affected Sports World

When tennis icon Pam Shriver faced the unthinkable during the recent Los Angeles wildfires, it wasn’t just the danger of the flames she had to contend with. While evacuating her home to escape the fires, she also became the victim of a theft that struck at the heart of her decades-long career.

This heart-wrenching incident, amidst the already stressful situation, showed just how chaotic and challenging the wildfires have been for many, including sports stars. But Shriver’s story is just one of many, as the wildfires in Southern California have impacted a number of athletes who have had to put their games on pause to face real-life struggles.

Here’s how some of the biggest names in sports have been affected by the fires:

Pam Shriver: A Double Blow

Pam Shriver, a familiar voice for both ESPN and Tennis Channel and coach to rising star Donna Vekić, was not only forced to evacuate her home due to the fires but also faced the heartbreaking theft of her car, which contained most of her precious Grand Slam trophies. “My son & I are at a police station reporting our car was stolen from the hotel parking lot we evacuated to when fires started,” Shriver shared on X.

While staying in a hotel after evacuating her home due to the Pacific Palisades fire, Shriver discovered that a Dodge Durango Hellcat parked in the lot had been stolen. According to ESPN, the car was holding a treasure trove of her accomplishments, including all five of her US Open trophies, five French Open trophies, and an Australian Open trophy.

Shriver discovered the theft around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning while staying at the Marina Del Rey DoubleTree. As if the wildfires weren’t enough of a challenge, now her family was facing another devastating blow. “Now, my family’s a victim of a crime, too,” Shriver shared with ESPN.

It’s hard to imagine a worse twist of fate—already fighting to stay safe in the face of a raging fire, Shriver now had to contend with the theft of a priceless part of her career.

Kawhi Leonard: Family First Amid the Flames

LA Clippers star Kawhi Leonard was another athlete who had to put family before basketball. He missed a game against the Denver Nuggets to be with his loved ones after their home in Pacific Palisades was threatened by the fires.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue expressed his full support, saying (via TOI), “You definitely have to take care of home… Totally had my support 100%.” Leonard’s decision to prioritize his family showed fans the importance of staying grounded during times of crisis.

Steve Kerr: A Mother’s Heartbreak

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr faced a personal tragedy when his 90-year-old mother, Ann Kerr, lost her home to the fires. Kerr shared the news after a game, saying (via TOI), “I want to send my thoughts and condolences to everybody in Los Angeles dealing with the fires. My mom lives in Pacific Palisades. She had to evacuate.”

Despite his mother’s loss, Kerr expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the importance of perspective during such devastating events.

JJ Redick: Emotional Reactions from the Lakers Coach

Lakers head coach JJ Redick also had to deal with the emotional impact of the fires. He shared that his family had evacuated their Pacific Palisades home, adding, “Our family, my wife’s family... they’ve evacuated. I know a lot of people are freaking out right now, including my family.” Redick’s heartfelt words spoke to the fear and uncertainty that many in the area were experiencing.

Taylor Fritz: Giving Back to His Community

California-native tennis player Taylor Fritz decided to give back to the community in the wake of the wildfires. After advancing to the third round of the Australian Open, Fritz announced that he would be donating his first-round prize money of $82,000 to wildfire relief efforts.

“Southern California is my home, and I spent a long time in LA. I’m doing whatever I can to assist,” Fritz said (via Last Word On Tennis). His generosity inspired many, showing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, and Jessica Pegula: Standing in Solidarity

Tennis stars like Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, and Jessica Pegula have all expressed their shock and support for those affected by the fires. Keys made a $20,000 donation to the Los Angeles fire department.

Whereas, Pegula, known for her animal rescue work, has shared information on how people can help displaced pets. Their acts of kindness remind us that even in times of crisis, athletes have the power to make a real difference.
