Para-Athlete Chirag Tyagi Murder: Police Detain Fellow Sportsperson Over Alleged Rivalry

National-level para-athlete and gold medallist Chirag Tyagi was allegedly shot dead in Ghaziabad, with police suspecting the murder was motivated by a previous complaint that led to another athlete's disqualification during a document verification process.

Tyagi, 24, a resident of Basantpur Sethli village in Muradnagar, was found dead near Sai Upvan in Ghaziabad on Saturday. The promising para-athlete had recently returned from a training camp in Pune and was expected to reach home after arriving in Delhi on May 29.

According to family members, they last spoke to Tyagi on Saturday morning when he informed them that he would be home by the afternoon. However, his mobile phone later became unreachable before police informed the family of the tragic incident.

Fellow para-athlete detained during investigation

Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Dhawal Jaiswal said preliminary examination of the body and evidence collected from the crime scene suggested that Tyagi had been shot dead.

During the investigation, police detained Yash Khatik, who is also a para-athlete and had previously trained alongside Tyagi.

According to investigators, Tyagi had earlier lodged a complaint against Khatik during a document verification process. The complaint allegedly resulted in Khatik's eligibility being cancelled, a development that police believe may have triggered resentment and a desire for revenge.

Accused allegedly confesses

Police said that during questioning, Khatik allegedly confessed to shooting Tyagi with a pistol.

Authorities are currently working to recover the weapon used in the crime while continuing to collect evidence related to the case.

Chirag Tyagi Probe continues

Police have launched a detailed investigation into all aspects surrounding the murder and are examining the sequence of events leading up to Tyagi's death.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the para-sports community, with Tyagi regarded as one of the country's emerging para-athletes. His untimely death has raised concerns over athlete safety and has left fellow competitors and supporters mourning the loss of a talented sportsperson.

Further legal proceedings are underway.
