Paris 2024: Michael Johnson to Wayde Van Niekerk - Fastest Men in the 400m at the Olympics

By Rishab VM

The 400 meters, a classic one-lap sprint, has been a staple of the Olympic Games since its inception in Athens in 1896 (Men's). This event not only tests the speed of an athlete but also their endurance and strategy over the course of a full lap around the track.

Over the years, numerous athletes have left their mark on this event, but a few stand out as the fastest men to have ever competed in the 400m at the Olympics.

Wayde Van Niekerk

Currently, the world record for the 400 meters is held by Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, who set an astonishing time of 43.03 seconds at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This performance not only shattered the previous world record held by American Michael Johnson but also earned van Niekerk the title of Olympic champion.

Van Niekerk's achievement is particularly remarkable as he started from lane eight, traditionally considered a disadvantage due to the staggered start. Van Niekerk's 43.03 is the fastest time ever recorded in the 400 meters, surpassing even the quickest relay splits, which are typically faster due to the running start.

For instance, Michael Johnson's fastest relay split of 42.94 seconds still falls short when considering van Niekerk's reaction time in his world record run.

Adjusting for van Niekerk's reaction time of 0.181 seconds, his 400-meter sprint was effectively run in 42.85 seconds, making it the fastest 400-meter distance ever covered.

Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas is the reigning men's Olympic champion, having clinched the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

His victory continues the legacy of excellence in the 400 meters, a race that has seen historic performances and fierce competition. However, he has withdrawn from the event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

One of the most memorable moments in 400-meter history was at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where American Kevin Young won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles with a world-record time of 46.78 seconds.

Young was the first man to break the 47-second barrier, a feat that stood unmatched for nearly three decades until it was finally surpassed in 2018.

The current era of the 400-meter hurdles is dominated by three exceptional athletes: Karsten Warholm of Norway, Rai Benjamin of the United States, and Alison dos Santos of Brazil.

Warholm, the reigning Olympic and three-time world champion, holds the world record of 45.94 seconds, set during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Benjamin, with a personal best of 46.17 seconds, and dos Santos, the 2022 world champion, have pushed each other to new heights, making their rivalry one of the most thrilling in track and field.

Of the 30 fastest times ever recorded in the 400-meter hurdles, 28 belong to Warholm, Benjamin, and dos Santos. Their performances have not only redefined the event but also set a new standard for future generations.

The 400 meters has consistently produced some of the most electrifying moments in Olympic history. From Michael Johnson's double victories in the 200 meters and 400 meters at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics to Wayde van Niekerk's record-breaking run in Rio, the event continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

As we look forward to future Olympics, the legacy of the fastest men in the 400 meters will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of sprinters to push the boundaries of human speed and endurance.
