The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics has ignited a wave of international backlash due to its controversial imagery involving drag-themed representations of religious and historical figures.
Further fueling the controversy was a performance parodying Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper.' Eighteen performers took the stage, mimicking the iconic painting with a modern twist.

A woman donning a large silver headdress, reminiscent of a halo often associated with Jesus in classical art, drew significant attention. This depiction, viewed by many as a mockery of the revered religious image, particularly angered the Christian community.
Among the creative acts intended to celebrate France's rich history and culture, one particularly provocative performance stood out. A headless figure of Marie Antoinette, styled in drag makeup, performed holding her severed head, symbolizing the last queen of France before her execution during the French Revolution.
This scene, along with other drag-themed acts, became a focal point of the event, stirring mixed reactions. Social media erupted with criticism, with many expressing their dismay over what they perceived as disrespectful and sacrilegious portrayals.
Critics argue that while artistic freedom is essential, it should not come at the expense of mocking deeply held beliefs and historical figures.
Supporters, however, defended the ceremony's artistic expression, emphasizing the importance of challenging norms and sparking dialogue through provocative art.
''Earlier Olympic ceremonies used to depict traditions n culture. Now Paris Olympic opening ceremony presented : Drag queen, LGBTQ, Decapitated woman, man in woman dress, obese woman. The entire ceremony was about Satanism and Pedophilia'' wrote on user on 'X'.
"How far the West has fallen," another user on X wrote comparing the the opening ceremony with past editions of the global event by sharing videos from 1992 Olympics.
Many well-known political personalities, notably those from the United States, denounced the show as a symbol of Western civilization's cultural decay. Tesla inventor Elon Musk, who purchased the X platform, blasted the billboard, stating, "This was extremely disrespectful to Christians."
