On Saturday, July 27, refugee athlete Amir Ansari led some of the world's best road cycling athletes in the men's time trial at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This momentous occasion was a proud milestone for Ansari and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.
As Ansari prepared for his race, nerves were evident, with the slippery streets of Paris stretching out before him. However, each pedal stroke seemed to invigorate the young cyclist, allowing him to savour the moment despite the challenges ahead.

The 24-year-old navigated the first corner cautiously, fully aware of the dangers posed by the wet conditions, especially after witnessing several crashes in the earlier women's race.
The constant drizzle continued to be a factor in the men's event, but Ansari persevered. He crossed the finish line unscathed in front of the iconic Grand Palais, securing 30th place with a time of 40:26.14. He finished just over four minutes behind the newly crowned Olympic champion, Remco Evenepoel of Belgium.
Ansari's participation in the Olympics marked the culmination of an extraordinary journey. Born in Iran and raised in Afghanistan, he fled Afghanistan in 2015 amidst escalating conflict and sought refuge in Sweden. It was in Sweden that Ansari discovered his passion for cycling, joining the Stockholm Cycling Club and finding a supportive community.
Over the past eight years, Ansari has honed his skills and represented the Stockholm Cycling Club and the UCI Refugee Team at various national and international championships in both time trial and road race competitions.
Speaking to the UN Refugee Agency ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ansari reflected on the significance of his participation. "It is a big honour and responsibility to be part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. I am one of those who made it to safety, but many lost their lives on the way," he said. "It feels good that I can represent them, and I hope I can do it in a way that makes them proud."
Ansari's story is a testament to the power of sport to inspire and unite. His determination and resilience serve as an inspiration not only to refugees worldwide but to all who face adversity. As he continues his journey, Ansari's achievements remind us of the strength of the human spirit and the unifying power of the Olympic Games.
