Paris 2024: Stupa’s Tech Facilitates Indian Table Tennis Team’s Preparations ahead of Olympics

In an unprecedented move, the Indian table tennis team, buoyed by their historic qualification for the Paris Olympics via World Rankings, has turned to advanced analytics and AI to enhance their preparations.

Stupa Sports Analytics, a trailblazer in sports technology, is at the forefront of this initiative, providing critical support at a preparatory camp organised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). This camp, held from June 7-16 in Bengaluru, marks a significant phase as the team gears up for the Olympics.

Comprehensive Analytics Support

The camp brought together elite players, including Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai, Manav Thakker, Manika Batra, Archana Kamath, and Sreeja Akula, along with reserve players G. Sathiyan and Ayhika Mukherjee. The focus was on developing strategies to compete against the world's best through performance analytics, rally analysis, and AI-driven insights tailored for both players and coaches.

Deepak Malik, Co-Founder and COO of Stupa Sports Analytics, who is also a former coach of the Indian Table Tennis Team, led the analytical operations. His role was pivotal in interpreting data from Stupa's AI solutions, offering actionable insights and recommendations to enhance player performance.

Enhancing Player Preparation through Technology

Emphasizing the transformative potential of technology in sports, Malik stated, "To provide analytics support at this camp, which has been approved by SAI and recommended by both the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and Massimo Constantini (Head Coach of the Indian table tennis team), is an honour for us.

"Our goal is to empower the Indian table tennis team with precise analytics and insights, enhancing their performance. By understanding game styles, trends, and patterns, our tech will help the players develop specific tactics and focus on improvement areas. We are committed to helping our athletes reach their maximum potential and bring glory to India."

Massimo Constantini, Head Coach of the Indian Table Tennis Team, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the crucial role of analytics in their training regime. "Qualifying for Paris through the World Rankings is a significant milestone for India, placing us among the top 16 teams globally, a position we aim to sustain consistently. Stupa has been instrumental in our journey, providing comprehensive data that complements coaching insights with statistical analysis and visual aids.

"Metrics on ball contact, player movement, and shot timing have greatly enhanced our preparation and performance discussions. This analytical support is crucial in training camps, just like physiotherapy and fitness regimes. Stupa's involvement in prestigious events like the WTT Star Contender underscores their leadership in sports analytics, offering federations and clubs an invaluable suite of tools. Their innovation sets them apart in the industry, supporting our quest for excellence on the global stage."

Historical Context and Future Aspirations

Stupa's collaboration with the Indian team is not new. The company co-hosted the WTT Star Contender in India, a pivotal event where Sreeja Akula secured her qualification for the Olympics. Presently, Stupa continues to provide advanced performance analytics and data support as the Indian team readies for the Paris Olympics 2024.

The Olympics will commence on July 26, 2024, with table tennis matches starting from July 27. The women's and men's singles gold medal matches are scheduled for August 3 and 4, respectively.
