By Meeth Agrawal

Positive news has emerged for India from the Paris Olympics 2024 as shooter Manu Bhaker has secured her spot in the gold medal match for the women’s 10m air pistol event. Bhaker, who came into the Games as one of India’s top medal contenders, is now on the brink of winning India’s first medal at this Olympics.

In the qualification round, Bhaker showcased her skill and composure, finishing third. This performance has set the stage for her to compete in the final and aim for the gold medal. Joining her in the final are Veronika Major from Hungary, who finished first, and South Korea's Oh Ye Jin, who came in second. Other qualifiers include Trinh Thu Vinh from Vietnam, Kim Yeji from South Korea, Li Xue from China, Sevval Ilayda Tarhan from Turkey, and Jiang Ranxin from China.

Bhaker shot a total of 580/600 points with 27 X’s to finish below Veronika (582 points with 22 X’s) and Ye Jin (582 points with 20 X’s).

Manu Bhaker’s gold medal match timing and format

Manu Bhaker will compete in the gold medal match on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at 15:30 IST at the Châteauroux Shooting Centre. The format for the final consists of two series of three shots each, fired within 150 seconds per series, followed by fourteen single shots, each fired within 50 seconds, totaling 20 shots to determine the winner.

After the first eight shots, the lowest-ranking finalist will be eliminated, and subsequent eliminations will occur after every two shots until the gold and silver medals are decided.

Tiebreakers in rifle and pistol events follow specific rules to ensure a clear winner. The first tiebreaker is the highest number of inner tens. If a tie remains, the highest score of the last 10-shot series is considered, working backward by 10-shot series until the tie is broken.

If any tie persists, scores are compared on a shot-by-shot basis using inner tens, beginning with the last shot.

Should the tie still remain, decimal ring scores are compared starting from the last shot backward. For events using decimal scoring, ties are broken by the highest score of the last 10-shotseries and then by comparing decimal scores on a shot-by-shot basis.

India’s hopes for an early medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 rest heavily on Bhaker’s shoulders. Her performance in the qualifiers has already demonstrated her potential, and now, all eyes will be on her as she aims to convert this opportunity into a historic victory.
